The aim of the presentation to help business owners, managers, trainers, heads of departments and senior group leaders improve the quality of early career outdoor educators adventure based learning facilitation. It will begin by identifying and exploring the challenges which early career outdoor educator’s face in developing content knowledge and applying their pedagogical skills. Then the results of the literacy review conducted in the design of the Adventure Based Learning unit taught in the First Year College at Victoria University will be presented and discuss. This provides an excellent framework to identify the essential skills of an early career outdoor educator in contrast to someone that has several years of experience. Some of the scaffolding and unit design will be discussed to help other business strategies and create a training pathway for their staff. Finally the presentation will introduce the concepts of transformational and instructional leadership as frameworks that manager, business owners, trainers and senior group leaders can apply to coach and mentor early career outdoor educators to improve their adventure based learning facilitation.
About the Presenters

I am Aaron Simson-Woods. I am a teaching focused academic for the First Year College at Victoria University, teaching outdoor education and leadership. I am currently studying a Master of Education at the University of Melbourne focusing on Leadership and Management. I have a passion for high quality and well facilitated outdoor and environmental education programs.
