Hear from three people about their chosen pathway into a career in the outdoors
Meet Danya, who is currently working in Momi Bay, Fiji, and is originally from Woi Wurrung Country in Melbourne, Victoria.
Her journey into the outdoors began during the COVID-19 lockdowns, when she wanted to go hiking every time restrictions lifted.
In 2022, she completed a joint certificate:
- Certificate IV in Outdoor Leadership and a Certificate IV in Guiding.
Danya now works freelance as an outdoor educator. She works for about seven or eight different companies, including schools, outdoor providers, hard-top camps, and student travel companies. She also spends some of her spare time working at an outdoor gear store.
Meet Maddie, currently in her second year of teaching as a physical education, health, and outdoor education teacher at a secondary school, having recently completed a four-year teaching course at Federation University in Churchill.
Currently teaching Year 12 Outdoor Education, Year 9 Outdoor Education, and half of Physical Education.
She had a “Permission to Teach” arrangement in her final year of study, where she worked as a full-time teacher at the same school, gaining firsthand experience and participating in many camps and excursions.
Maddie has since presented at conferences and facilitated Professional Learning sessions sharing her knowledge and expertise with the sector.
Meet Spencer, an outdoor leader. He takes us on a walk on Taungurung country. His journey into outdoor leadership started in 2021 when he enrolled in a year-long double certificate course at Boxhill Institute:
- Certificate 4 in Outdoor Leadership.
- Certificate 4 in Outdoor Guiding.
Spencer primarily works for various schools and outdoor education companies, mostly in Victoria but occasionally interstate in places like Western Australia or Queensland.
In addition to outdoor leading, he uses his acquired outdoor skills to pursue a passion for being an outdoor documentarian.
