Building and Joining Communities of Practice for Outdoor Education

This session will explore the creation and nurturing of Communities of Practice (CoPs) within the outdoor education community, focusing on identifying which CoPs would be most beneficial at present. CoPs are essential platforms for both school-based and non-school-based outdoor educators, enabling them to share knowledge, address challenges, and foster innovation across all aspects of their careers and areas of interest. The session provides a practical guide for determining the most relevant CoPs, addressing common challenges, and showcasing their transformative potential through real-world examples.
Participants will engage in discussions to identify which CoPs are needed in the outdoor education community today. They will then develop action plans to either establish these CoPs or join existing ones, using an online tool designed to facilitate this process. By the end of the session, attendees will have a clear path for creating or joining CoPs that promote continuous learning, inclusivity, and advocacy for outdoor education. This session emphasises the importance of these communities in driving sector-wide change and enhancing learning opportunities in both school and non-school settings.
About the Presenter
Dr. David Marsden is a highly experienced leader in outdoor education and experience based learning, beginning with his own early adventures in South Eastern Australia’s wilderness. He is currently a Director with The OREAS Group, overseeing inme Global, Travel 4 Good, and OREAS Consulting. David’s career spans roles as an educator, academic, and executive leader. His doctoral research advanced outdoor educator preparation in the tertiary sector. He has chaired Adventure Activity Standards committees and serves on state and national advisory boards, advocating for safety and education in the outdoors.
