This presentation will explore how to prepare students to navigate a volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous world, using Carey Zero as a model.
Carey Zero is a compulsory, year-long experience for Year 10s. The experience consists of two key components: Zero at Kew, a year-long immersive subject and the Zero Journey, a three week program in Far North Queensland.
Students are placed in small classes with a maximum of 15 students, led by their Zero Mentor- a teacher who guides them throughout the year. Zero empowers students by nurturing their physical, spiritual and academic wellbeing, while also fostering leadership and essential life skills. By connecting with each other, as well as their mentor each day, Zero allows students strengthen connections within the Senior School at Carey.
Whilst the Zero at Kew subject is compulsory, the Zero Journey is an optional program in Terms 2 and 3. Here, students explore the Great Barrier Reef, cattle stations and a conservation property through a six-day bushwalk. At each stage of the journey students are placed with experts from the field in which they are focusing.
The Zero program has been co-created with current Carey students. We have worked through surveys and focus groups to ensure student-voice is at the core of this experience.
Through connecting the immersive learning in the outdoors and the Zero at Kew subject, Carey Zero offers students the opportunity to learn about the world that they will one day grow to change.
About the Presenter
Tom Ziebell is an experienced Outdoor Educator with a passion for innovation and a belief that Outdoor Education can be used as an immersive opportunity that facilitates engagement in all learning areas. Over the past few years, Tom has been focusing on how to best create opportunities for students to engage in meaningful learning around sustainability and conservation. The culmination of this work has been Carey Zero, a three week, journey-based program in Far North Queensland.
