This workshop will explore how I have used natural history stories to centre the voices of the places we visit on river journeys. This practice is informed by place-essential pedagogy and aims to give voice to more-than-human entities and the many layers of history in the river places we visit. In this presentation, I will unpack how we integrated the layers of history stored in the river places to create a place-based experience for university students in two different locations in Victoria. I hope to provide some strategies for Outdoor Environmental Educators to enact similar pedagogies in their own programs and to offer provocations for reviewing where we go for programs, why we visit these places, and how to create more reciprocal relationships with the places we engage with in OEE.
About the Presenter
My relational connections in the world are what make me me. My ancestral connections are of European origin, my immediate family has been in Australia for a few generations now and living on Wurundjeri, Wadawurrung and Gadubanud country. I currently live and work on Djarra Counrty, which is somewhat of a returning home as my dad grew up here. I have had the privilege of working in OEE for 10 years and over that time have developed impactful connections with places and their stories. The focus of my work is to facilitate students process of connecting to and uncovering the stories of the places we visit, whilst collaborating with said places to encourage the students development as outdoor environmental educators.
