Eco-anxiety and a Desire for Hope: A Discussion on Climate Change and Education

In this workshop, we draw upon a recent collaborative project exploring eco-anxiety and the impacts of climate change in environmental education. The project involved 11 experienced environmental educators who reflected on the emotional and affective aspects of climate change in their specific contexts. 6 insights were derived from the educators’ reflections, offering a heuristic for working through the challenges of climate change. This workshop will introduce the catalysts for the project, before sharing and discussing some of the individual reflections. Following this, we discuss the insights from this project with the attendees, seeing what elements find resonance with the educators in the audience. Overall, this workshop will be interactive, involving discussion and reflection on the topics of climate change, education and eco-anxiety.
About the Presenter
David Hills is a lecturer in Outdoor Education at the University of the Sunshine Coast, Australia. His research areas in outdoor education include educational technology, curriculum development, and transnational education. Dave is also certified in all major disciplines of outdoor education fieldwork and values bridging theory and practice.
Robyn Fox is a lecturer in Outdoor Environmental Education at the University of the Sunshine Coast, Australia. Her research explores climate change impacts and opportunities on outdoor environmental education and the role of field naturalist journals in developing ecological literacy in outdoor environmental studies. She has a passion for the river, mountain and coastal environments of south-eastern Australia and enjoys teaching and spending time in these places.
Scott Jukes is a lecturer in Outdoor Environmental Education at Federation University, Australia. His research explores pedagogical development and experimentation in outdoor environmental education, inspired by posthumanist and new materialist theories.
