Enhancing Weather Safety Management in Outdoor Organisations: Insights from the NATCORR National Weather Survey

Expectations of organisations and field staff to respond to weather have risen exponentially with the advancement of technology, stakeholder expectations and the changing climate in which we operate. However, outdoor providers and staff need further training or professional development to support decision-making and systematic implementation of practice.
We report findings of the NATCORR National Weather Survey conducted in collaboration with the Bureau of Meteorology. We examined what resources outdoor organisations and staff required, what professional development they drew upon and the services they relied upon to inform their decisions, aligned with weather safety management.
Key survey findings include:
1. Challenges: Rising expectations due to technological advancements, stakeholder expectations and climate change.
2. Findings Analysis:
o Resource Needs: Identifying necessary resources for weather risk management.
o Professional Development: Evaluating existing opportunities and identifying gaps.
o Service Reliance: Exploring reliance on weather-related services.
3. Implications and Recommendations: We will present options for enhancing weather safety practices through informed interventions.
They underscore the need for tailored support and professional development, ensuring safer outdoor experiences for all stakeholders.
About the Presenter
Nicky Hanson is the Project Manager of The National Centre for Outdoor Risk & Readiness (NatCORR), a collaborative initiative led by Outward Bound Australia. Prior to this, Nicky and her partner owned & operated Explorus Adventure Learning in WA for 24 years, both having worked in school outdoor education before making this leap. NatCORR is the ideal vehicle for combining Nicky’s professional skillset, her passion for the conservation of the natural environment, and doing everything possible to prepare the outdoor sector as we adapt to our changing climate.
Mr Brendon Munge FHEA is an Associate Lecturer in the Bachelor of Education (Secondary) / Bachelor of Recreation and Outdoor Environmental Studies and the Diploma of Outdoor Environmental Studies. Brendon is also the Program Coordinator for the Bachelor of Recreation and Outdoor Environmental Studies and the Diploma of Outdoor Environmental Studies. Brendon’s primary focus in teaching has been on providing new students with foundational knowledge and experience in outdoor and environmental studies. However, he also has a significant component of his work linked to utilising expeditions, particularly bushwalking, to engage in outdoor education learning.
