How can you tailor an experience for each individual whilst still facilitating a group? It’s simpler than you might expect.

Engaging young people in the outdoors can have a positive impact on their wellbeing and mental health. If you can keep an experience fun, safe and useful the rest will largely take care of itself.

While one size fits some, you will miss an opportunity to achieve better outcomes for all participants if you don’t take a tailored approach to how you facilitate an experience.

What you’re doing is nowhere near as important as how you’re doing it. In this workshop we’ll talk about how you can tailor an experience to each individual within a group, ensuring that they can participate in a way that is culturally, emotionally and physically safe.

We’ll cover strategies for engaging young people into an experience and you’ll be surprised at how unstructured it appears. There is magic in the vulnerability that you can bring to each interaction as long as you let go of your expectations on how your adventure will run. “It’s wise to have a plan, but foolish to fall in love with it.” (unknow)

Hint – Being trauma aware and focusing on the human connection is the fastest way to create an individual experience for all members of a group.

There will be an opportunity to workshop scenarios in a QnA format including why nobody should care if you abseil!

About the Presenter

Ever since I was a barefoot kid in the rainforests of far North Queensland, I’ve had a love of adventure and nature. My brother and I were equipped with a life jacket whistle as safety and often were in the bush all day until dinner time.
Fast forward 39 years and I’ve had a career working in the outdoor education field mostly running expeditions, oversees work, then found my calling as a youth worker in the out of home care system.
For 15 years now I’ve committed myself to working with young people who’ve experienced complex trauma and neuro divergent diagnosis.
I operate Gippsland Adventure Therapy, a youth wellbeing service that mostly does things outside with the aim of positively impacting young people’s mental health and wellbeing.
