The path isn’t a straight line: it’s a spiral. You continually come back to things you thought you understood and see deeper truths (Gillespie, 2013). From this quote, I invite attendees to journey with me in understanding that significant events has the potential to create a deeper understanding of one’s experiences and (re)new(ed) sense of oneself. I intend to share my PhD research praxis focusing on two primary notions: (i) Pedagogy of Place as crucial in anchoring students’ experiences in the Outdoors and (ii) Vygotsky’s Sociocultural theory, particularly the notion of Perezhivanie, investigating memorable experiences in the outdoors, challenged by pedagogies which has the reminiscing potential to understand lived experiences gaining insights into events in our lives. This presentation is focusing on the NOEC ‘s stream- Outdoor Education Discovery as latest development in Outdoor Education Research in primary and secondary education at BBC-Brisbane Boys’ College- QLD.
About the Presenter
I am passionate Outdoor Educator, working in the industry since 1999, in South & North America. Former Outward Bound Instructor, Program Leader for OEG, and currently as Head of Outdoor Education (P-12) for BBC-Brisbane Boys’ College, and Teacher of Geography and HPE. Committee member for OEAQ as Schools Liaison Officer. Recently finished a PhD in Education at The University of Queensland. Primary focus of my research is EE Philosophy and Practice and Vygotsky’s Sociocultural theory applied to Outdoor Education. Love Sea Kayak, and any outdoor adventures with my family. I am a father of 2 mini adventure explorers who keeps me busy and fulfilled.
