The way forward using physical literacy enriched environmental design

This presentation will provide the foundation for a new perspective related to design (e.g., trails, urban planning, outdoor spaces, indoor spaces) based on physical literacy. The concept of physical literacy will be introduced for creation of quality movement experiences for all as the basis of physical literacy enriched environmental design (PLEED). The six key PLEED principles will be introduced and illustrative examples of each principle will be presented. The relationship of PLEED to concepts of Universal Design and Accessibility will be discussed. This presentation will feature a group of international speakers (in-person and virtual) providing insight from both a research and applied perspective. A group reflection will complete the presentation, so as to confirm the key concepts and principles of PLEED. Participants will receive a link to a PLEED success stories from around the globe, and access to a voice annotated powerpoint of the materials.

About the Presenter

Sam Fenton is a lecturer in physical education and outdoor recreation with a research focus on Physical Literacy.
He has been developing a new approach to community led innovation, taking an appreciative inquiry approach to support community groups to identify and prioritise strategic actions to improve physical literacy in their community.
A recent project presented at an International conference, led to the creation of a global group of experts focused on Physical Literacy Enriched Environmental Design (PLEED).
His work continues bringing the best of global expertise to support local projects in Gippsland. His collaborative, codesigned projects have led to sustained momentum through the power of positive community alignment.

Tom has been working in developing and implementing projects, programs, events and cross- sector collaborations for Change the game since the start 2014. Is a pioneer in Sweden in the area of creating and developing “physical literacy communities”.
(He is a former Olympian (Atlanta 1996) and professional athlete (beach volleyball) and has developed programs for athlete and coach development in sports since 2010. He is trained by University in Birmingham as tutor for the Empowering coaching program and has since 2016 trained coaches in various sports to enhance their skills at create conditions where athletes develop intrinsic motivation to participate. Tom has also a background as senior consultant in the brand experience industry, winning the « Best sponsorship in Europe award » 2019 as one of the top achievements.)

Sarah Noble is a Mother, Strategic Partnerships and Major Projects Lead at Wyndham City Council and Founder of The Active Village Project.
Sarah has 25 years experience in growth corridor local government, not for profit, commercial leisure & sport and professional & voluntary recreation clubs. Sarah has led over 20 Master Plans and 530 million worth of public infrastructure projects; and Delivered policy reform and frameworks to enable communities’ greater access to their public infrastructure.
Sarah led the Wyndham Sports Strategy which identified a 1billion price tag for the public and private infrastructure required to meet the needs of Wyndham City, one of the country’s fastest growing municipalities with 163 ethnicities. Sarah is currently working with Wyndham City in partnership with WMG Holdings to deliver the Wyndham A League Sporting Centre of Excellence and Lifestyle Precinct the home of Western United FC. Sarah founded The Active Village Project in 2020 and Co-chair of the Asia-Pacific Society for Physical Activity – Physical Literacy Special Interest Group.

Janis Neufeld is the Founder and Executive Director of Inclusive by Design Association, a Social Enterprise increasing access and inclusion in outdoor recreation spaces in British Columbia, Canada. Since 2015, Janis has experienced success in several infrastructure projects by incorporating the principles of Physical Literacy Enriched Environmental Design, enhancing Universal Design’s limitations to outdoor design.

Dr. Natalie Houser is an Assistant Professor at the University of Saskatchewan in the
College of Kinesiology. Dr. Houser’s current research is focused on physical literacy
enriched pedagogy and creating physical literacy enriched movement opportunities in
different contexts, working towards building more confident and competent movers.
Natalie is also a research associate at the Center for Circus Arts Research, Innovation
and Knowledge Transfer (CRITAC) in Montreal. Natalie is involved in community-
engaged research focused on promoting child wellbeing through the development of
physical literacy and the creation of positive and inclusive movement experiences.

Trevor is owner and Managing Director of Sportsmith Ltd. He has worked in and around the sport,
physical activity and physical education sector for nearly 40 years, including national and
international management, development and consultancy roles in the public, private and voluntary
sectors.
Sportsmith has at its heart, the aim of inspiring and motivating more people to be more active more
often. It works with partners to create programmes, activities and experiences which demonstrate
the social, emotional and physical benefits of being physically active, using the principles of physical
literacy as its foundation. Its work has included consultancy support to develop public policy,
influence the design of built environments, create exciting and innovative experiences and connect
like-minded agencies to deliver a shared vision of an active population. Clients and partners include
digital innovators, culture and heritage establishments, housing developers and public authorities.
Trevor is Vice Chair of the International Physical Literacy Association, a board member for Active
Cornwall and Wellness For Greatness (Kenya) and Treasurer of his village sports club.

Grim is an educator and developer at Change the game. Since 2017, he has been researching and applying physical literacy as well as supporting and training leaders in all types of sectors.
Grim has a masters degree in sports medicine and made his thesis evaluated the use of the PLAYfun tool for assessing movement task proficiency among Swedish children. Since 2018 has educated and supported leaders in all kinds of sectors that strive to adopt physical literacy mind set. Has also, as part of the CTG team, developed and adapted several planning PL tools for Swedish contexts.
