“We don’t do school”: A case study of the Tails of the Tides Project at RISE

The Tails of the Tides Project, in partnership with local organizations Humpbacks and High Rises and Green Heroes, provides students with real-world exposure to conservation, sustainability and marine biology efforts in our local region – the beaches of Tweed and Coolangatta. The project also meets national curriculum outcomes for Geography, Science, English and Maths.
Students engage in hands-on conservation work and create their own marine biology projects, tackling real-world issues and developing practical and achievable solutions to solve those issues, taught using a Design Centered Learning (DCL) model.
This case study will share the successes and ‘flearnings’ (learnings through failure) of the term long project and discuss the ways we are trying to elevate these key educational needs: Better Preparation for Real-World Challenges by involving students in practical conservation work; Increased Industry and Entrepreneurial Engagement through collaboration with industry professionals; and Experiential Learning Opportunities by offering hands-on environmental education and field work. You may even do a DCL blitz to explore your own solution to an environmental issue.
About the Presenter
Dave has worked in the Outdoor Ed sector all over the world over the past 24 years. He landed in Victoria after completing his MSc in Outdoor Education at Edinburgh Uni in 2009, met his wife and started a family. Most recently moving up to the Gold Coast to further his teaching career in 2022 after leading OE in Melbourne schools. He now heads up the year 9 campus for Hillcrest Christian College in Coolangatta; with a drive to find the sweet spot in experiential education between engaging student’s HEADS, HEARTS and HANDS.
