Out Doors Inc provides outdoor adventure and recreational programs for individuals with mental health conditions. This article explores ODI”s program design philosophies and guiding principles, risk management strategies and operations, and how outdoor practitioners adapt their practice to this work. Additionally, Pei Ting shares her own insights and experiences from working for ODI and provides case studies to illustrate the experience of the participants she has encountered in this work.
About the Presenters

Out Doors Inc (ODI) is a Melbourne based not-for-profit mental health organisation that provides outdoor adventure and recreational programs for individuals with mental health conditions. ODI’s aim is to help participants build positive social connections and enhance their mental health by engaging in nature-based activities.
Pei Ting Tham 谭佩婷 (she/her) is a Program Coordinator at Out Doors Inc. with a strong passion for promoting inclusivity and accessibility in the outdoor industry. With a Master of Teaching, Bachelor of Psychology, and years of experience in outdoor education, Pei Ting currently works with adults with mental health conditions and learning disabilities. She is dedicated to amplifying diverse perspectives and improving outdoor accessibility for underserved communities. Through her research on the experiences of People of Color in the Australian outdoor industry, Pei Ting aims to create a more inclusive outdoor community for all individuals to thrive. Pei Ting’s most updated list of dreams include representing Malaysia in the Winter Olympics, working in Antarctica, and getting featured in Gardening Australia.
