Stoney Creek Lodge: A Journey Towards Sustainable Outdoor Education
The revitalization of Stoney Creek Lodge was more than a simple upgrade; it was an exercise in problem-solving and a commitment to sustainable practices. Our goal was to begin transforming the lodge into a model for environmentally conscious outdoor education, but the path was not without its challenges.
One of the initial hurdles was decision fatigue. With an abundance of options available, particularly in the early stages, we found ourselves overanalyzing, which slowed progress. We learned the value of a decision matrix, streamlining our process and enabling us to make efficient choices. Conversely, our regional location presented its own set of limitations. Accessing suitable services, such as commercial waste management for recycling, proved difficult. This taught us that the pursuit of sustainability is a journey of constant improvement, not an immediate achievement of perfection.
Our hot water upgrade process yielded significant results. By replacing traditional systems with heat pumps, we reduced our baseline electricity bill by one-third and our occupied electricity consumption by approximately half. This also decreased our gas usage by 95%. When occupied, this upgrade alone saves us a minimum of 300 kWh, or a little over $100, per day in electricity costs.
Our educational approach has been integrated seamlessly into our activities. Rather than treating activities as simple, “box-ticking” exercises, we weave content into the experience itself. For example, during canoe sessions, participants learn about the reservoir’s use, local bird and wildlife, and the surrounding wetlands. Rock climbing sessions include lessons on the geology of the rocks they’re climbing on. We have also introduced dedicated educational programs, such as our interactive “long history talk,” which covers everything from geological formation to modern land use. Furthermore, we collaborate with Traditional Owners to deliver authentic cultural education sessions.
The key takeaway from our journey is to simply start. Develop a long-term vision to guide your actions, but don’t wait for perfection. Begin with smaller, manageable steps, and remember that constant improvement is the ultimate goal.
These experiences have provided valuable lessons for our team. We’ve learned that careful planning, adaptability, and a commitment to continuous improvement are essential for successful sustainability initiatives.
